Most books and resources claim these green Hammonds were produced for the U.S. Army during World War I, but you can count me among the skeptics. I exchanged emails with the venerable Peter Weil, and he graciously shared a list of the other 14 known surviving green Hammonds. He pointed out that most were made between 1918-1919, and green Folding Multiplexes were sold well after the Great War. So who really knows? Perhaps folks bought green typewriters as a proud display of their support for the boys fighting overseas? I hope we can eventually uncover more about these rather mysterious green typewriters.
