1916 Royal 10 Serial # X241543 1916 Royal 10 typewriter, Serial # X241543 Brian Decker's 1916 Royal 10 typewriter. 2025-12-06 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Brian Decker: 1916 Royal 10 Serial # X241543 This is my Royal 10 with the standard carriage length, S/N X241543, dating at 1916. I bought this machine at Adam's Antiques in Denver, PA, on 11/24/2006. I really wanted a Royal 10 with double-glass windows and decent decals. I paid $93.50 plus $5.61 in sales tax, or $99.11 in total, for this machine. I had the platen and feed rollers resurfaced by Ames Supply Co. back in December of 2007. I put new feet on it this year, in 2025. It has not been serviced and, in fact, the carriage draw band is not connected. To make the typing sample, I applied pressure to the right end of the carriage as I typed character-by-character. It needs a cleaning, lube, and adjustment, and of course it needs the carriage mechanism to work. However, with a fresh ribbon, it produces a pretty clear imprint even as-is. The pitch is 10 CPI, so I suppose it has a Pica typeface.

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008. I still have my collection of around 57 machines, and now I have a renewed interest in getting some of them in good working and cosmetic order.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal 10 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal 10 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
