189X Caligraph 4 Serial # *9800 189X Caligraph 4 typewriter, Serial # *9800 Vincent DeVito's 189X Caligraph 4 typewriter. 2026-09-15 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Vincent DeVito: 189X Caligraph 4 Serial # *9800 Caligraph No. 4 from the collection of the late Bob Aubert. I purchased this in Allentown, PA, in August, 2026. It's in pretty fair shape. All the keys are well readable and all the typebars move relatively smoothly. The paint, pinstripes, and especially the decal show a decent amount of wear, but nothing catastrophic considering its age. Everything could use a good cleaning and touching up some rust in places. The mainspring is still original and functional and the escapement works great, though the platen is cracking (still serviceable) and the feed roller has a flat spot large enough to prevent paper from feeding. The only other issue I could identify is that it's missing the plastic platen knob they added on the left side of the platen as part of the new frame design. I'm going to attempt to see if I can devise a replacement from something aftermarket.

Burgeoning collector and hobby repairer with an interest in unusual designs and interesting history. My original focus was collecting and troubleshooting Selectrics, but I've been shifting to antique machine collecting as well. I prefer all my machines to be operational, at least to a degree...
